    THE HANDBOOK OF THE NORTHERN VERMONT ARTIST ASSOCIATION

 MISSION STATEMENT:  "To encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards and advance the cause of creative art"

MEMBERSHIP:  Membership is open to all visual artists, working in any visual medium, who live in the northern half of Vermont (Middlebury to Canada).  Membership is non-juried, and the dues are $15 annually.  The dues year begins on Jan. 1st, and ends on Dec. 31st.  Any member whose dues are paid in full may participate in all NVAA events.

   Members who have been recognized by the NVAA Board of Directors as having made outstanding contributions to the NVAA may be granted Honorary Membership for Life

    Membership forms may be found on this website, and in each issue of the NVAA Newsletter.  Members may copy the forms to give to potential new members.

CONTENT OF ARTWORK IN NVAA SHOWS:  Artwork depicting nudity may be included in NVAA shows, unless it depicts graphic sexual content.  Artwork that promotes hate or violence against groups or individuals may not be allowed in any NVAA shows.   The NVAA Board of Directors and the chairs of the various show committees reserve the right to exclude from any NVAA show artwork that is deemed offensive or discriminatory.  It is assumed that NVAA artists will use good judgment and common sense when selecting art for NVAA shows. 

 ORIGINALITY: All artwork in NVAA shows must be original.  This means that the image, content or ideas may not be copied from other sources, but must be the original creation of the artist. 

PRESENTATION OF ARTWORK:  Artwork in NVAA shows must be framed in a professional manner.  Mats must be clean and neatly cut, and glass must be clean and free of chips or scratches.  Frames must be securely wired for hanging.  Clip-secured glass frames and "saw-tooth" type hangers are unacceptable.

REPRODUCTION PRINTS:  High quality reproduction prints of original artwork may be exhibited, in browse bins only, in the Red Mill show, but not in the annual Juried Show.  Prints must be labeled as prints, with proper archival information.

PICKING UP ARTWORK: NVAA members must pick up their artwork on the date and time specified in the newsletters at the end of each show.  The NVAA is not insured, and can not assume responsibility for damage to unclaimed artwork.  The NVAA Board of Directors reserves the right to refuse admission to future art shows to members who consistently fail to pick up their artwork on time.

INSURANCE AND LIABILITY:  All artwork exhibited in NVAA shows is at the artist's own risk.  The NVAA does not insure artwork against theft or damage.

NEWSLETTERS: "Artifacts", the NVAA newsletter, is published once a month.  Members are welcome to send the editor items about their shows, or notices about workshops.  The deadline for every issue is the first of every month.  Members may also send the editor jpeg files of black and white artwork to go on the newsletter's covers.

NVAA WEBSITE:  All members are entitled to a page on this website's "Virtual Art Gallery". All restrictions regarding content as listed above apply.   Send a CD of jpeg type digital photos of 5-8 artworks, plus a brief bio written saved as a word type file, to Robert Waldo Brunelle JR.  135 Raceway Road, Jericho, VT 05465. 

BIOGRAPHY BOOK: A large binder containing resumes of NVAA members is displayed at NVAA art shows.  Every member may have one plastic sleeve page in the book. Members may update their page as often as they wish.  Contact the President if you wish to add or update your page.

NVAA OFFICERS: The offices of the NVAA are: President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary.  The list of current officers may be found on the front page of the newsletters.

BOARD MEMBERSHIP~  Any member in good standing is eligible to serve on the Board, provided he or she demonstrates the ability to work in harmony with the existing Board members.  The Board reserves the right to terminate Board membership to any member who fails to attend meetings,  fails to chair a committee,  or is deemed contrary to the aims of the organization. 

COMMITTEES:  There is a committee for each NVAA art show and event.  Although each committee is co-chaired by two or more Board members, any NVAA member may serve on any committee.

VOLUNTEERS:  The NVAA is an all volunteer organization, and members are encouraged to help out when ever they can with any of our art shows and events.  The newsletters will list the names of committee members to contact if you wish to help with an event.

FEES AND COMMISSIONS:  The Annual Juried show has a non-refundable participation fee of $15, to help cover the costs of advertising and prize money. 

THE ANNUAL JURIED SHOW:  Information on preparing entries may be found on this website.  Forms, dates and times for the show will appear in the newsletters.  At the juried show openings the following prizes are awarded:  BEST IN SHOW, HAROLD KNIGHT AWARD FOR OILS, HORACE ELDRED AWARD FOR PHOTOGRAPHY, RUTH BOTTOMLEY AWARD FOR WATERCOLOR, NVAA AWARD FOR ACRYLICS, NVAA AWARD FOR PASTELS, NVAA AWARD FOR PRINTS, NVAA AWARD FOR MIXED MEDIA, NVAA MERIT AWARDS (4), and the KAY PETRIE ARTIST'S CHOICE AWARD (voted by members who attend the opening)   A minimum of five works in each medium category are needed for an award to be given for that medium.   All work entered in our juried show must be for sale. 

 

 

BY-LAWS OF THE NVAA

NAME AND OBJECTIVES~ The name of this organization shall be the Northern Vermont Artist Association.  The Objectives shall be: 1) Encourage the Study, 2)Improve the practice, 3) Elevate the standards, and 4) Advance the cause of creative visual art.

OFFICERS ~ The NVAA Board shall be comprised of the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer, and up to eleven additional members.   The President shall preside over all meetings.  The Vice President shall assume the President's duties if the President is absent.  The Secretary shall record the minutes of the meetings.  The Treasurer shall deposit and distribute NVAA funds as needed.

BOARD MEMBERSHIP~  Any member in good standing is eligible to serve on the Board, provided he or she demonstrates the ability to work in harmony with the existing Board members.  The Board reserves the right to terminate Board membership to any member who fails to attend meetings,  fails to chair a committee,  or is deemed contrary to the aims of the organization. 

DUES YEAR~ The NVAA dues year shall begin on Jan. 1st and end on Dec. 31st.

COMMITTEES~ The President shall appoint committees as needed to advance the objectives of the organization.  Board members shall chair the various committees that organize and oversee NVAA events.  Any member may volunteer to assist any committee.

EXHIBITIONS~  The NVAA shall hold at least one annual art exhibition, the date and details of which shall be determined by the Board of Directors.  All NVAA exhibitions shall be open to all paid-up members of the organization.

BOARD MEETINGS~  Board meetings shall be held at times and places agreed upon by the President and the Board Members.  The agendas of the meetings shall be determined by the President and the Board Members.

TERMINATION OF MEMBERSHIP~ The Board reserves the right to terminate the membership of any member whose conduct the Board deems prejudicial to the best interests of the association and its aims, or for conduct which the Board deems unbecoming to a member of the association. 

VOTING~  If the President and the Board determine that an issue requires a vote by the general membership, then a ballot shall be published in the monthly newsletter.   After the Board has tallied the votes, the results shall be published in the following newsletter. 

WEBSITE~  The President and the Board reserve the right to refuse to post any image on the NVAA website that is deemed inappropriate.   

DISSOLUTION~  In the event of dissolution, the property of the NVAA, after payment of any indebtedness, shall not be distributed to the members, but shall be distributed by the Board of Directors to such charitable or educational organizations whose purpose most nearly coincides with the objectives of this organization.
